Whenever a series with a similar theme to a previous hit comes out, it is almost certain to get severely criticized.

KBS’ “Worlds Within,” a new drama that bears striking similarities to SBS’ “On Air,” will face judgment tonight when it airs its first episode.

Like “On Air,” this star-studded series tracks the drama production process. But unlike its predecessor – which revolved around a manager, an actress, a scriptwriter and a producer – “Worlds Within” focuses on the relationship between two program directors, played by celebrities Song Hye-kyo and Hyun Bin.

Through Song and Hyun’s characters, viewers will get an inside look into the world of television, with a bit of romance on the side.

But will it be compelling enough to nab the same high ratings as “On Air”?

Actress Song Hye-kyo makes her comeback with a new soap opera titled “Worlds Within” four years after her last drama “Full House” in 2004.

“When I first read the synopsis I found it very interesting. As I respect and strongly believe in director Pyo Min-soo and swriter Noh Hee-kyung, there was no reason to refuse,” Song said. Departing from her previous feminine image, she takes the role of Joo Jun-young, a promising rookie TV producer, who exudes tomboyish charm.

“I tried to look like a real TV producer, as natural as possible while avoiding looking dirty or unkempt. Of the characters that I have played, this is the most realistic.”

“I felt physically exhausted shooting this drama since I had got used to movie production through three films in four years. Shooting a drama requires quick responses, so I had a hard time at the beginning. But whenever I was at a loss, director Pyo guided me immediately, so I was able to adapt to the new environment soon.”

“Worlds Within,” about the hectic lives of a drama production team, starts on KBS 2 next Monday.

Song Hyekyo Returns to Small Screen with “Worlds Within”

October 21, 2008 at 12:56 pm | Posted in Stars, Television | 1 Comment

Korean dramas are full of entertainment, with cliched yet dramatic plots, cute and handsome male characters, both main and supporting, and always a young pretty heroine.

Among these heroines is Song Hye-kyo, 26, who will appear in the new drama “Worlds Within.” She returns to the small screen for the first time in four years after her hit series “Full House” with top singer/actor Rain.

“For the past four years, I have been working on three films and so I was more accustomed to the movie filming atmosphere. TV dramas require quick reactions and with help from the director, I’m now back on track,” Song said at a press conference of the program Monday at a hotel in Seoul.

Actress Song Hye-kyo will return to the small screen as an up and coming producer in KBS’ new drama “Worlds Within” produced by Pyo Min-su and written by Noh Hee-kyeong.

“When I finished filming `Full House’ with producer Pyo four years ago, we promised to work together with writer Noh. I was their fan and so I had no reason to say no,” Song said during an interview with Yonhap News Agency.

“Worlds Within” depicts the story of producers who work in a broadcast company. Her costar Hyun Bin will also appear as a fellow producer. The drama brings the two actors together as fellow students, colleagues and eventually, lovers.

“I liked that it wasn’t a Cinderella story many people dream about. It’s different from previous melodramas. Scenes that may really happen in our daily lives happen in the drama,” she said.

Song Hye-kyo Unveils US Indie Film in Busan

October 6, 2008 at 10:55 am | Posted in Movies, Stars | 2 Comments

Hallyu star Song Hye-kyo unveiled her new movie “Make Yourself at Home,” at the 13th Pusan (Busan) International Film Festival over the weekend.

Song, one of the best known Korean actresses in Asia, surprised many when she chose to work on an independent film by first-time Korean-American director Sohn Soo-pum.

“The film is not necessarily a Hollywood debut for me, rather it is an independent American movie,” Song said, Sunday in Busan. “I was very comfortable acting because I was working with people who loved movies.”

A joint U.S.-Korea production, “Make Yourself at Home” is described as a psychological thriller about a woman shaman Sook-hee, who chooses to live an ordinary life in the United States. She marries a Korean-American named Peter, played by Arno Frisch.

Song’s character in the film is something of a femme fatale, a role that is new to the actress who has played mostly sweet, innocent characters in popular Korean dramas like “Full House” and “All In.”

“The role was a challenge because it is a character that I have never played before. I didn’t choose it to change my image, I chose the work because I liked the overall feeling I got from reading the scenario,” Song said.

Song’s dialogue in the film is about 80 percent in English. “It was really difficult. The staff all turned into English teachers and corrected my pronunciation. I am grateful to them,” she said.

Her co-stars only had good things to say about Song. Firsch praised Song’s professionalism on the set.

When asked about Song’s English ability, co-star Athena Curry said it was “excellent.”

Song admitted she hopes to make it in Hollywood, following in the steps of other Korean stars like Kim Yun-jin and Rain. “I believe that I can work hard to make it in Hollywood, by steadily making movies,” she said.
