Whenever a series with a similar theme to a previous hit comes out, it is almost certain to get severely criticized.

KBS’ “Worlds Within,” a new drama that bears striking similarities to SBS’ “On Air,” will face judgment tonight when it airs its first episode.

Like “On Air,” this star-studded series tracks the drama production process. But unlike its predecessor – which revolved around a manager, an actress, a scriptwriter and a producer – “Worlds Within” focuses on the relationship between two program directors, played by celebrities Song Hye-kyo and Hyun Bin.

Through Song and Hyun’s characters, viewers will get an inside look into the world of television, with a bit of romance on the side.

But will it be compelling enough to nab the same high ratings as “On Air”?

Actress Song Hye-kyo makes her comeback with a new soap opera titled “Worlds Within” four years after her last drama “Full House” in 2004.

“When I first read the synopsis I found it very interesting. As I respect and strongly believe in director Pyo Min-soo and swriter Noh Hee-kyung, there was no reason to refuse,” Song said. Departing from her previous feminine image, she takes the role of Joo Jun-young, a promising rookie TV producer, who exudes tomboyish charm.

“I tried to look like a real TV producer, as natural as possible while avoiding looking dirty or unkempt. Of the characters that I have played, this is the most realistic.”

“I felt physically exhausted shooting this drama since I had got used to movie production through three films in four years. Shooting a drama requires quick responses, so I had a hard time at the beginning. But whenever I was at a loss, director Pyo guided me immediately, so I was able to adapt to the new environment soon.”

“Worlds Within,” about the hectic lives of a drama production team, starts on KBS 2 next Monday.

Actress Song Hye-kyo will return to the small screen as an up and coming producer in KBS’ new drama “Worlds Within” produced by Pyo Min-su and written by Noh Hee-kyeong.

“When I finished filming `Full House’ with producer Pyo four years ago, we promised to work together with writer Noh. I was their fan and so I had no reason to say no,” Song said during an interview with Yonhap News Agency.

“Worlds Within” depicts the story of producers who work in a broadcast company. Her costar Hyun Bin will also appear as a fellow producer. The drama brings the two actors together as fellow students, colleagues and eventually, lovers.

“I liked that it wasn’t a Cinderella story many people dream about. It’s different from previous melodramas. Scenes that may really happen in our daily lives happen in the drama,” she said.
